Something for Everyone at the Kansas State Fair
Hutchinson, Kan. – Weird, wild and wonderful – the Kansas State Fair has something for everyone. So grab a friend, a date or your entire family and get on a stick to the Kansas State Fair. Family-friendly fun will be plentiful at the Fairgrounds with free entertainment, competitions and educational opportunities planned throughout the ten-day event running Sept. 5-14 in Hutchinson.
Discount gate admission tickets to the Kansas State Fair are available now through Thursday, Sept. 4 and can be purchased at Dillons stores, at the Kansas State Fair ticket office or at www.kansasstatefair.com.
Child-friendly fun is easy to find at Agriland – a special area packed with interactive games, wooden cutouts and more, all planned with young Fairgoers in mind. Agriland – located in the Pride of Kansas Building – helps identify the importance of agriculture and its impact on the state.
The educational aspect of the Fair doesn’t stop with Agriland. Make sure to also visit the Birthing Center where children can learn about life and agriculture with opportunities to interact with baby animals and even witness live births. Kids can also catch dairy cows being milked by professionals in the dairy industry through daily demonstrations at the milking parlor.
Looking for a relaxing spot to sit down? Dr. Goddard’s lab is a great way for children to watch a live science show packed with surprises, experiments and enjoyable learning. This show is recommended for all ages and is offered daily in the Do Art Building.
But don’t think the fun is limited to the buildings. Keep an eye out for Steve Trash, a Rockin’ Eco Hero and Kid Comedian who will be strolling the Fairgrounds. You might even catch a glimpse of his friend, Oscar the Robot, a full-of-energy, witty and entertaining source of fun at the Fair.
Want to let the kids stay up a little later? Don’t miss out on letting them watch Frozen at the Kansas State Fair Movie Night on Sept. 13 at 8 p.m. at the Nex-Tech Wireless Stage. What kid (and even some parents) doesn’t love singing along with Anna and Elsa?
Get On a Stick food options for kids? That’s a no brainer. Be sure to have them try a Pronto Pup “on a stick” or homemade ice cream. Both Fair favorites, both delicious.
Looking to save a little money and still enjoy all the Kansas State Fair has to offer? No worries there, either. The Fair provides multiple deals that make your wallet (and kids) happy. Dollar day, sponsored by Dillons, is Monday, Sept. 8. Admission is $1 or free with Dillons Plus Card (only one card per person) and Midway rides are one coupon per ride. Or, look into the Family Pack. It includes two adult and two children outside gate admission tickets, four State Fair railroad tickets, four Giant Slide tickets, four Skyride one-way tickets and 22 Midway ride tickets. The $93 valued package is only $75, and again, is available through Thursday, Sept. 4.
From Hunter Hayes, to Matthew West with Cloverton to Chris Young with Courtney Cole, teens are able to get their pop, contemporary Christian and country fixes at the Kansas State Fair.
Before catching a concert, don’t forget the midway. The Kansas State Fair’s prominent spot for the wild, weird and wonderful rides. Ride-O-Rama, where wristband prices will be $25 each, is Tuesday, Sept. 9 from 3 p.m. to 10 p.m., Wednesday, Sept. 10 from 12 p.m. to 10 p.m. and Thursday, Sept. 11 from 3 p.m. to 10 p.m. Or take advantage of Midway Moonlight Madness on both Fridays of the Kansas State Fair. Through this deal, wristband prices are $25 on Sept. 5 from 3 p.m. to 11 p.m. and Sept. 12 from 12 p.m. to 11 p.m. Blast Call for the midway is Sunday, Sept. 14 from 12 p.m. – 8 p.m.
Interested in a little comedy? Ron Diamond, comic hypnotist, is back once again. He’s guaranteed to make your side ache with help from his hypnotic-audience members. This show runs daily at Bretz & Young Injury Lawyers Arena.
If you’re near Gottschalk Park, grab a seat to see the Daredevil High Dive Show – an adrenaline-pumping good time featured daily. Or, if you’re not one for sitting, register to be part of the Meadowlark Mile Fun Run/Walk on Saturday, Sept. 13 at 9 a.m.The course includes stops at both the Big Slide and a Midway game. Raffle tickets are given away at each check-in stop with prizes awarded at the end.
Last, but not last, make sure to try some Fair samplings. Who can resist the Cheese on a Stick or Mac n’ Cheese with Bacon on a Stick?
Adult Night Out
If you’re looking for an evening out, the Fair has all of your answers. From food and drinks to entertainment, it’s a one-stop-shop for a budget-friendly good time.
Consider parking near gate E-9 and riding the sky ride over to Ft. Riley Blvd. The ride provides a view of the fairgrounds like no other and a prime opportunity to scout must-do evening activities. If the ride leaves you overwhelmed with options, start your night out with a ride on the Ye Old Mill, the longest standing ride at the Kansas State Fair.
Afterwards, catch a bite to eat – and beverage – at the Kansas Beer and Wine Garden. Or, if you prefer an on-the-go option,refined pallets can indulge in alligator or calamari on a stick.
Looking to gain a historical perspective of the Fairgrounds? Find time for a stroll through the State Fair Museum located in the Lair White House. To 2014 museum “Year of the Clown” theme features the works of longtime fair sign painter and clown, J.B. “Bardo” Holdren.
