1. The Sound of Collapse
Your music is described as “chaotic, emotionally unfiltered aggression” for a world in social collapse. How do you balance raw rage with the precision required to make it musically devastating?
-Writing and performing is cathartic. It’s an avenue for us to channel our day to day frustration into something healthy, raw and intense. Sitting in a room with your friends and building something is truly a release bigger than most in our weeks.
2. “Tongues of Hell” – First Taste of the Apocalypse
What does this single represent in the larger narrative of Live Without? Is it a mission statement, or just the first explosion in a chain reaction?
-This song specifically is a direct response to the state of the world. It was written late last year as we began to see this unsettling new reality unfold. Thematically, the album is as much a statement on reinventing yourself as it is pushing back against the disgusting nature of humanity in 2025.
3. 2000s Metalcore Revival – Nostalgia or Necessity?
With bands like Botch and Converge cited as influences, do you see your sound as a revival of that era’s intensity, or is it more about adapting that chaos for today’s even more fucked-up world?
-I believe for us it’s less about a revival and more about writing and honoring what we love in music. We’ve all wanted to play in a band of this style for years before we formed SC. We aren’t the type of band who use backing tracks or laptops. We just want round, loud energy in our music at our shows. Giving people something to think about while also giving them a place to release their daily stresses is hugely important to us.
4. Themes of Live Without
The EP tackles burnout, propaganda, and identity disintegration. Which track cuts the deepest for you personally, and why?
-I would say the first single, Exit Interview. Lyrically it’s directly about burning down 11 years of my life for radical change. The idea of reinvention at any age is important to me. Sacrificing happiness for a paycheck or a perception of success is not a sustainable life practice. Live for yourself and be true to what feels right in your heart.
5. Recording with Will Putney
How did working with a Grammy-winning heavy music legend shape the final product? Did he push you into even darker territory?
-Will is the best. We recorded the album at Green Door Studios in Denver with Felipe Patino. He mixed as well. Will helped refine mixing and mastered the album for us. This is the second time we’ve worked with him. He truly made the album sound meaner, heavier and raw. We had the opportunity to open for Better Lovers a few years ago and met Will then. Everything he touches is worth listening to and we’re honored he helped us make this album so much darker and meaner sounding.
6. Denver’s Heavy Music Scene
How does the city’s underground influence your sound? Are there local bands that fuel the fire, or do you feel like outsiders in your own scene?
-What’s funny is no. Denver is an incredibly musically rich city. We have so many bands worth paying attention to and most nights of the week you can go to an all local show that’s pretty packed. That being said, we’ve always been the weird band. Just writing what feels right to us regardless of what is happening in our scenes is important. We’ve been supported by the metal and hardcore community here for the most part and we’re grateful for that. Some of our favorites from our community are Church Fire, Chew Thru, Lost Relics, Circling Over, Tunnel Jumper, Irah Nox.
7. Lyrics as Catharsis
Devin, your vocals sound like they’re exorcizing demons. Are these songs born from personal turmoil, or are you screaming for the collective disillusionment of 2025?
-First off, thank you. The answer is both. I’ve personally experienced a lot of change in the last 18 months of my life that have really shaped the my view on the world. Through all of that we’ve seen this disgusting shift in America through the election and now in this narcissistic and ignorant world we’re living in. Focus on what you can control and take care of your friends, family and community at a smaller level. Your friends rights are in jeopardy and they need you to be loud in support of them and communities under siege.
8. The Art of Controlled Chaos
Your music is both “cathartic and calculated.” What’s the writing process like when trying to harness that kind of energy without losing control?
-Our guitar player Mhyk typically brings ideas to practice that are 70% flushed out. The rest of us then write our parts, help flush out the full song and then really beat them into refinement until we’re happy. I tend to write topically in lump paragraphs and rework them into songs that seem right. Practicing and writing with an energy that you want to perform at just add that level of anxiety and intense energy we want in our live shows.
9. What’s Next After the EP?
Is Live Without a stepping stone to a full-length, or are EPs the perfect format for your brand of sonic violence?
-Live Without is our fourth release and we’re already writing for a couple releases in 2026. Hoping to record again later in the year for a split with a band from the UK as well as full length.
10. Parting Words for the Broken
If Live Without had to be summed up in one sentence to someone on the edge, what would it be?
-Thank you for taking the time and interest in checking us out. To sum this record up: It’s a relentless and thought provoking punch in the mouth.
