What happens when a pint-sized female singer\/guitarist JamBase <\/em>calls a \u201csupersonic fretburner\u201d meets Gov\u2019t Mule bassist Jorgen Carlsson? Add Amfibian drummer John Hummel for gorgeous rock and fierce jamming — recorded by John Agnello and mixed by Sylvia Massy on Debra Devi\u2019s new EP, A Zillion Stars Overhead<\/em>. \u201cI\u2019ve always dreamed of working with Sylvia,\u201d Devi says, \u201cshe brought out the power in the recordings, and gave each song a beautiful shimmer.\u201d  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Carlsson and Devi met backstage at the Beacon after Mule\u2019s NYE 2019 concert. \u201cJorgen and I got into a deep chat about production,\u201d Devi explains, \u201cand wound up talking about recording together. I was thrilled, as I consider him one of rock\u2019s greatest bassists. Six weeks later we were at Kaleidoscope Sound in Union City NJ. I had just played guitar there on a record John Agnello was producing, so I asked him to run the session. We had a lot of fun!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A Zillion Stars Overhead<\/em> opens with \u201cWhen It Comes Down (Jam),\u201d a dreamy blues-rocker that morphs into a blistering psychedelic jam caught live in the studio. \u201cWe just took off,\u201d Devi says, \u201cJorgen and John were so locked into each other that, as the guitarist, I felt like an equestrian balancing astride two galloping horses. It was a blast!\u201d The trippy lyric video for \u201cWhen It Comes Down (Jam)\u201d includes behind-the-scenes studio footage and photos.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Track 2 is a rock\/jam cover of Neil Young’s \u201cThe Needle and the Damage Done\u201d with creamy slide, ethereal vocals and a searing guitar solo. Track 3, \u201cStay,\u201d is reminiscent of The Cult\u2019s \u201cShe Sells Sanctuary\u201d with layered guitars, a pounding disco\/rock beat, and Devi’s soaring vocals. \u201cJorgen loves heavy rock, but he also loves ABBA,\u201d Devi says, \u201cso I thought he\u2019d enjoy recording \u2018Stay,\u2019 which flirts with pop. He gave it the perfect driving Jah Wobble-type bass line.\u201d Track 4 is Massy\u2019s \u201cradio friendly\u201d cut of \u201cWhen It Comes Down.\u201d The EP closes with Devi\u2019s guitar instrumental \u201cCanna Indica,\u201d in DADGAD tuning.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Devi produced the EP and asked producer Rob Fraboni (Bob Dylan, Keith Richards) to add his proprietary RealFeel™ technology to the master. \u201cIt fills in \u2018holes\u2019 in digital sound to give it a velvety analog quality,\u201d she explains.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A Zillion Stars Overhead<\/em> will be released April 23 by Devi\u2019s True Nature Records and distributed by Digital Music Marketing (DMM), which handles blues\/rock\/jam labels like Landslide Records and artists ranging from Derek Trucks to Tinsley Ellis. Devi is the first female guitarist invited to endorse Homestead Amplifiers, which provides amps to Warren Haynes, Gary Clark Jr. etc.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
