Brighton experimental artist\u00a0Nick Hudson<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0presents\u00a0‘Catherine in the Curate’s Garden’<\/strong><\/a>, the latest audio-visual offering from his album\u00a0‘Kanda Teenage Honey’<\/a><\/strong>, an expansive 16-track collection recorded in a former Soviet movie studio in Georgia in the build-up to the country’s current unrest, an explosive combination of circumstances that recently earned him coverage in\u00a0Billboard<\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>\n

“Originally, ‘Catherine In The Curate’s Garden’ was a folk song, written eight years ago when I was living in an industrial unit on the south coast of England. \u00a0It never sat comfortably in those rustic garments and while writing ‘Kanda Teenage Honey’ it made itself known as a simmering, swampy, gothic art rock piece. \u00a0I asked my friend\u00a0Stuart Dahlquist<\/strong>\u00a0of\u00a0Asva\/Sunn O)))\u00a0<\/strong>and\u00a0Burning Witch<\/strong>\u00a0to grace it with his inimitable bass tone and we subjected the drums to some infernal alchemy,” says\u00a0Nick Hudson.<\/strong>

\n“The lyrics narrate the de-martyring of two saints – Sebastiane and Catherine, who shame and dispose of the curate who has judged and condemned them, before conjoining in sexual and romantic ecstasy in a throng of lupine cheerleaders. \u00a0Call it biblical speculative fiction if you will, with a queered-up slant. \u00a0This is echoed in the video wherein we recreated a sequence from Carl Dreyer’s vanguard silent film ‘The Passion Of Joan Of Arc’ (1928) – I actually storyboarded this sequence and we shot it frame for frame in a junkyard in Tbilisi, with my Russian gangster rapper friend Tex2ra (yes, a male) as Joan and a host of Pasolinian non-actors cast for their compelling visages and on-screen energies.”

\nThis follows Hudson’s most recent videos for\u00a0‘Unspent Youth<\/strong><\/a>‘\u00a0<\/strong>and\u00a0‘Sky Burial While Alive’<\/strong><\/a>,\u00a0<\/strong>featuring a prologue text on dictators, spoken by\u00a0Alfreda Benge<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0– collaborator and wife of legendary British composer\u00a0Robert Wyatt<\/strong>. The video was filmed at the Bologna villa used in\u00a0<\/strong>the\u00a0Pasolini<\/strong>‘s film\u00a0‘Salo’\u00a0<\/strong>(itself a notorious and damning critique of fascism) and in Tbilisi with a cast of international performers.<\/p>\n

Having earlier previewed the singles\u00a0<\/strong>‘For My Silence’<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0‘Khevsureti’<\/strong><\/a>, this album was born of geographical explorations amidst musical territory that is hardly touched on. Mixed by and featuring\u00a0Toby Driver<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0of\u00a0Kayo Dot,<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0this album involves such luminaries as\u00a0Mogwai’s Stuart Braithwaite<\/strong>,\u00a0Stuart Dahlquist (Asva, Burning Witch, Sunn O)))<\/strong>,\u00a0Lizzy Carey (Bat For Lashes)<\/strong>, Robert Wyatt collaborator\u00a0Alfreda Benge, Christopher Nell<\/strong>\u00a0(legendary German performer and collaborator of US theatre visionary Robert Wilson), and soprano prodigy\u00a0Poppy Efemey<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Recorded with\u00a0Ilya Lukashev<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0<\/strong>at\u00a0Leno Studio<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0<\/strong>and\u00a0Sano Studio<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0<\/strong>in Tbilisi, this album was mastered to analogue tape by\u00a0Paul Pascoe<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0(Barry Adamson, Beat Hotel, Sleaford Mods)<\/strong>\u00a0at\u00a0Church Road Studios<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0in Hove, Hudson collaborates with some incredible Georgian musicians and his friend\u00a0Seva<\/strong>, a Russian dissident who fled the FSB, having worked for Navalny. Hudson explains, “He contributes a poem narrating his thoughts on exile, through which I’ve layered field recordings of the recent Tbilisi and Paris protests, where many of us got tear-gassed.”<\/p>\n

In 2021, Hudson released his\u00a0‘Font Of Human Fractures’<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0album and the\u00a0‘K69996ROMA:EP’<\/strong><\/a>, following his band\u00a0The Academy of Sun<\/strong><\/a>‘s opus album\u00a0‘The Quiet Earth’<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0in 2020. He has collaborated with such legends as\u00a0Wayne Hussey (The Mission)<\/a><\/strong>,\u00a0Matthew Seligman (David Bowie, Tori Amos, Morrissey)<\/strong>,\u00a0Massive Attack’s Shara Nelson<\/strong>, plus\u00a0David Tibet (Current 93)<\/strong>\u00a0and queercore icon\u00a0GB Jones<\/strong>. His vast output also encompasses painting, film and a novel.<\/p>\n

‘Kanda Teenage Honey’ is out now everywhere digitally, including\u00a0Spotify<\/strong><\/a>,\u00a0Apple Music<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0Bandcamp<\/a><\/strong>. Also available as a 4-panel CD digipak with an 8-page full colour booklet, it features artwork by Nick Hudson and Berdia Arabuli and photography by Carl Solomon, Jack Hubbell Rosene and Kenneth Anger.<\/p>\n

Hudson also recently published his book\u00a0‘The Land Exists So The Seas Don’t Argue’<\/strong><\/a>, showcasing a decade of lyrical output iplus ephemera with a foreword by renowned Scottish author\u00a0Chris Kelso<\/strong>.<\/p>\n
