Known for their boundary-pushing approach to technical death metal, Obvurt continue to redefine the genre with fresh ideas, fearless experimentation, and deeply personal songwriting.

Following the acclaim of their 2022 debut full-length Triumph Beyond Adversity ( Unique Leader Records ), and their 2025 sophomore effort An Alternate Dimension ( Brutal Mind ), the band shows no signs of slowing down. “Patience” stands as a bold example of frontman Philippe Drouin’s commitment to innovation—marking the first song he ever composed on his now-signature double-guitar .

“The writing process changed everything for me,” Drouin explains. “The double-guitar opened a whole new dimension of sound. No chugs, no tremolos—only hammer-ons and pull-offs. It forced me to rethink what brutal riffs could be.”

Obvurt have built their reputation not only on their ferocious musicianship but also on their spirit of resilience. After releasing their debut EP The Beginning in 2021, the band made headlines for performing an unorthodox set in front of an elementary school class where Drouin once worked as a teacher. Since then, they’ve endured lineup changes and challenges, but emerged stronger than ever with their current lineup:

Philippe Drouin – Guitars

Enzo Roussel – Bass

Michel Gagné Bouchard (Mitch) – Drummer

Drawing inspiration from icons like Decapitated, Suffocation, and Dying Fetus , Obvurt continue to carve their own identity in the death metal underground. Drouin’s personal journey—relearning guitar left-handed after injury, and adapting his technique to the radical double-guitar—is woven directly into the DNA of “Patience.”

The song embodies both struggle and endurance, channeling the very perseverance that defines Obvurt’s path. Fans got an early taste of this spirit with the recent single “Hold On To Hope,” inspired by Jason Becker’s resilience in the face of ALS. “Patience” takes that same ethos of survival and determination and pushes it into heavier, more brutal terrain.

With “Patience” and An Alternate Dimension , Obvurt prove that death metal can be more than brutality for brutality’s sake—it can be a canvas for meaning, innovation, and unbreakable will.

Listen to “Patience” now via Brutal Mind and prepare to experience Obvurt in an entirely new dimension.

For fans of: Decapitated, Suffocation, Dying Fetus

Label: Brutal Mind

For press inquiries, interviews, and review requests, please contact: zach@metaldevastationradio.com

Streaming here https://brutalmind.bandcamp.com/album/an-alternate-dimension

Check out the video:

https://youtu.be/9rO-lq2XN-I

1. The Single: “Patience”
1 “Patience” feels both brutally technical and deeply personal. When listeners hit
play for the first time, what do you hope they feel before they even start
analyzing the riffs? Something fresh and and new. At first, this song was
supposed to appear on my first solo album : Philippe Drouin – Le Chemin Du
Gaucher, but landed in Obvurt because of the line-up changes and evolution
of the band.
2 This track marks the first time you composed using your double-guitar exclusively.
At what moment did you realize this instrument wasn’t just a tool—but a new
creative language? After couple of weeks practicing with my new Dean
acquired Michael Angelo Batio Custom shop made in U.S.A. Once I get use to
it, I realize i can play a lot of techniques with this instruments, I have the
control the duration of the notes, now I am still cleaning my sound and play
with lowest level of gain as possible to avoid feedback.
3 You’ve described the song as having “no chugs, no tremolos—only hammer-ons
and pull-offs.” How did those limitations actually expand your brutality
instead of restricting it? I think it’s pretty brutal anyway, but writing with this
instrument changes the sound of the songs. There are no repeated notes , at
this speed, it doesn’t song great,
4 The title “Patience” suggests restraint and endurance. How does that concept
translate musically within such an aggressive framework? I had patience
everyry day to learn the guitar left handed over the last 7 years. And also I
have patience with kids everyday, that’s my daily job. So when it comes time
to do a song about it, you can feel the brutality because life is brutal.

2. The Video & Visual Identity
5 The video for “Patience” visually reinforces the song’s intensity and focus. How
important was it for the visuals to reflect the song’s deeper message of
perseverance? It was a landscape where we where alone, no tourists, so we
can film all day long without be disturbing, fun fact I had sunbunr undernath
my arms because of the sun. I burnt, literrally.
6 Were there any specific visual themes or emotions you wanted the video to
capture that the music alone couldn’t express? It was the first double-guitar
video I did with past bandmate on drums. It was a great experience though.
Time to move on with new material.

3. Reinvention Through Adversity
7 Your personal journey—relearning guitar left-handed and adapting to a radically
different technique—is central to Obvurt’s evolution. How did that physical
and mental challenge reshape your identity as a songwriter? Relearning the
guitar as lefy is the worst nighmare for any guitarist. I am working on my
technique everyday since then and this is SO diificult. I am not a left handed
and probably will never be. I just only can be the best Philippe Drouin left
handed player I can.
8 Many musicians would see injury as a limitation. How did you mentally flip that
obstacle into a source of innovation? Today it’s still limitations because I can’t
play 100% accuratly what I played as a right handed but all is coming in a good
way. I am still positive I can play as I was right handed on the guitar. The good
thing is I can play the double-guitar. When I play right handed, the problem is
the picking hand, my right hand. My fretting hand, lefty, on the fretboard wtill
works very well. When Michael Angelo release the first edition run of double-
guitar, I picked up one and begin to play. Today, I don’t regret it.
9 Do you feel “Patience” represents a turning point not just musically, but
emotionally for you and the band? Yes, all band members in Obvurt have the
Patience to practice their instrument.

4. From Hope to Endurance
10 Your previous single “Hold On To Hope” was inspired by Jason Becker’s
resilience. How does “Patience” continue or deepen that narrative? Hold on to
Hope is inspired by Jason Backer on the title « Hold On To Love » only. I can
explain. When I first listened to the videoclip, I was relearning the guitar. I
wasn’t able to listen it at full, the lyrics were too powerful. I know the
meaning of that song and I wanted to tribute Jason Becker calling a song Hold
On To Hope.
11 Would you say these songs are forming a broader thematic arc about survival,
or do they each stand as individual statements? Individual statement. If you
look to my solo album coming out next January 16th, you see these titles:
Sérénité,Acharnement, Résilience, Passion and Persévérance. All the words
are important for a person to learn a music instrument. In this upcoming
concept album I found important to tell about. That’s why « Patience » song
was supposed to be on « Le Cheming Du Gaucher »

5. The OBVURT Sound
12 Obvurt draws comparisons to Decapitated, Suffocation, and Dying Fetus, yet
your sound feels unmistakably your own. What defines “Obvurt brutality” in
your mind? First off, the lyrics are mostly about life and life is brutal. Everyday
we need to wake up in the morning and face the day!
13 How do you balance technical precision with emotional impact, especially in a
genre often judged on sheer intensity? Again, because of the lyrics, I feel them
eveyday and they are mine, brutal in some way. The technical side is the
double-guitar harmony thing the the LEFTY guitar make it technical!
14 Has your approach to writing changed between Triumph Beyond Adversity and
An Alternate Dimension, particularly with the introduction of the double-
guitar? Writing with the double guitar changes my way of writing for sure. 4
songs out of 10 were played on the double guitar. When using this
instrument, the way of writing is different because I can’t play repeated notes
at a fast speed, there are no tremolos, down picking etc.
6. The Band & Brotherhood
15 After lineup changes and challenges, the current trio feels extremely focused.
How has this version of Obvurt strengthened the band’s chemistry? It’s just
awesome. All of ust playing the same music for the same reason, it’s just
great. We will release a new single this year for sure.
16 How do Enzo and Mitch adapt to the unconventional guitar approach, and
what do they bring that completes the Obvurt sound? They follow me,
bringing their own style to the songs, forging something exiting to ear and see.

7. Looking Forward
17 Does “Patience” hint at where Obvurt is heading next, or is this just one
chapter in a constantly evolving process? This song is gonna be a part of our
set at every show for sure but yes, it’s one chapter, we are excited about the
next one.
18 Are there new techniques or conceptual risks you’re already experimenting
with for future material?Always. I am learning new techniques with de
double-guitar and I always want to expand my vocabulary as a musician.
Repeated notes, and single guitar solo are in the plans.

19 How do you want Obvurt to be perceived within the modern death metal
landscape five years from now? An innovative death metal band. A band that
pushes the limits of their instrument and never give up to any life challenge.

8. Closing Questions
20 If someone has never heard Obvurt before and “Patience” is their first
exposure, what do you want them to understand about the band by the final
note? Obvurt is about perseverance, resilience and life.
21 What does the word resilience mean to you today, compared to when Obvurt
first began? Wow, it’s a Huge step forward, I can’t believe I made it to this
point.
Finally, what’s your message to fans who have followed Obvurt through every
evolution, challenge, and reinvention? Thank you for all the great support, it means a
lot.
