Why was this the right track to spotlight next from You Only Die Once? Catchiest sounding track

The song hits hard with groove, grit, and aggression. What emotion or message were you trying to drive home with this one? Dying young from substance abuse

Where did the lyric concept for “FLATLINE” originate — a personal moment, a social observation, or pure heavy imagination? Too many young deaths cause by this.

What about “FLATLINE” do you feel best represents the current identity of WHEN EVIL CALLS? The change up of grooves and pacing.

The Lyric Video & Visual Direction

The lyric video adds a stark and intense visual punch. What was your vision for the visuals, and how closely did you work with the creator? Never wanted a lyric video but our Label made it work and as simplistic as it is the message gets through so props to Cameron on that.

What elements of the video best reflect the song’s mood, message, or brutality? Again the lyrics leave no room for misunderstanding the concept

Lyrics videos can be a window into a band’s mindset. What did you want fans to walk away with after watching it? How one bad decision can end a life to early

Sound & Production

You Only Die Once was produced, mixed, and mastered by Cameron Batista and Josh. How did their production style shape the heaviness of “FLATLINE”? The actual music was recorded years ago but there were no vox so we just patched James right in.

Your sound blends influences reminiscent of Hatebreed, Machine Head, Pantera, and even Foo Fighters. How do you fuse groove, metal, and modern aggression into something uniquely yours? Never wanted to be a soundalike band we write and take risks and always evolve , that’s key

Is “FLATLINE” a sign of where future music is heading, or is it one side of a bigger sonic picture? No idea but we want the listener to think as well as feel

Band Evolution & Chemistry

WHEN EVIL CALLS evolved out of GNAW — how did that transition change the band’s direction or intensity? GNAW was dark but my vox were too melodic for the upcoming sound we were evolving into.

Your lineup has gone through some serious evolution. What new strengths does this current formation bring to the table? We are still without a full time drummer and simply that’s what is holding us back from doing everything else we aim to do, and yes we’ve looked and the Orlando area sucks for actual players with the right drive to do what we are doing. Even james was from out of state and just moved here when we started working together.

How has your songwriting chemistry changed since forming WHEN EVIL CALLS? Well the 1st year or 2 i was doing all the riffs and lyrics then James and i started co writing which made songs easier to experiment with and further evolve our sound.

The Album: You Only Die Once
You Only Die Once seems to hit heavier and darker than your earlier material. What pushed you into this new era of no-holds-barred intensity? James vox was more of the hardcore edge i was looking for so that made it more dark and aggresive soundwise

Does “FLATLINE” tie into a broader theme running through the album? Death is a fact of life we are warning the listener to make smarter decisions

Looking back, what track was the hardest to write or record — and which one surprised you the most?
Josh – This was a hodge podge of pre recorded material from other versions of this band we still have about 3 albums of material ready to record. But we picked the best of the old stuff 1st.

James – For me personally the hardest one to do is You Only Die Once. The reason is the way I have to flow into it. Flatline was also kinda a hard one just because of the dynamics.

Live Energy & Fan Connection

How has “FLATLINE” landed with fans live? Does it shift the energy in the room? No idea the vid just came out and i set no expectations the fans tell us how they feel hopefully

Your music is built for physical reactions — pits, headbanging, shouting back. What does fan energy mean to you as a band?
Josh – Fans always hear it fresh and i envy that cause i’ve heard this stuff for years.

James – We definitely have some pit worthy songs. I can’t wait to share them down the road.

If you could describe a perfect WHEN EVIL CALLS show in three words, what would they be? metal groove core

Influences, Identity & Mindset

You cite influences as varied as Hatebreed, Machine Head, Pantera, and Foo Fighters. What unexpected inspirations sneak into your music that fans might not guess?

Josh – We put our own stamp on what we do.

James – You might hear some of my other influences in the future.

WHEN EVIL CALLS has a very raw edge — what personal or collective experiences feed into that aggression?

Josh – Not being able to play out live cause of a disability def helps that but we can still play live webcasts which is the future plan.

James – For me it’s just things I see in the world. It also comes from life experienced.

When fans hit play on “FLATLINE,” what do you hope they feel first? Power? Rage? Release? Catharsis? I just hope they feel and hear what we are trying to do which is something fresh.

Future Plans

Is another single or video already in the works for the next wave of “carnage”? We’ve had 2 so far prob the title track you only die once we still have to talk it over with the label

Are you already writing or tracking new material for a follow-up to You Only Die Once? We have 3 albums of material to still record when we can get a solid drummer

What can fans expect from you in 2025 — tours, collaborations, remixes, or something totally unexpected? hopefully our 1st live webcast because our energy takes these songs to another level

Final Fan Message

What’s your message to the fans blasting “FLATLINE” until their neighbors complain? Enjoy our music , hear our message, spread our name

How should new listeners dive into WHEN EVIL CALLS for the first time — by watching the video, jumping into the album, or catching you live? You can preview our whole album at chronoplast records on bandcamp.com and its 5 bux if you dig it. Also check out our GNAW album last rites cause that’s where When Evil Calls came from in fact Flatline was one of the last GNAW songs written and carried over to this band.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Available via Chronoplast Records Metal wrecking crew WHEN EVIL CALLS return swinging with the official lyric video for “FLATLINE”, taken from their latest album You Only Die Once — now available on CD. “FLATLINE” finally gets its time in the limelight, and it doesn’t tiptoe in.
