Origins & Vision
\n1. \u00d6r\u00f6kl\u00e9t\u00a0translates to\u00a0\u201cEternity.\u201d\u00a0What does this concept mean to you personally,
\nand how did it shape the direction of the album?
\nThe album\u2019s title perfectly captures the message of the new songs. Throughout the record, we
\nexplore themes such as respect for the past and our connection to it – how honoring what came
\nbefore us can give knowledge and people a kind of eternal life. On a personal level, this
\nconcept means the same to me. I believe immortality can only be achieved by respecting our
\nancestors and passing on the knowledge and values we inherited from them to future
\ngenerations.<\/p>\n
2. WitcheR has always balanced\u00a0atmospheric black metal with classical
\ninfluences.\u00a0At what moment in your career did you realize this fusion would
\nbecome your signature sound?
\nIt developed largely on an instinctive level. It\u2019s important to know that Karola is a trained
\nmusician with a university degree, who has been playing the piano since childhood and is
\ndeeply familiar with classical music – she listens to it and performs it regularly. When she sits
\ndown to write songs, a classical influence is naturally present in her compositions, and this
\nhas been part of our sound from the very beginning. We already paid conscious attention to
\nthis on our first album, when we adapted one of Ralph Vaughan Williams\u2019s choral works.<\/p>\n
3. Your statement describes the album as\u00a0\u201ca gateway.\u201d\u00a0What do you hope listeners
\nwill discover on the other side?
\nA world that stands in complete contrast to the modern one. A place where the spoken word
\ncarried real weight, where ancient knowledge and respect for our ancestors were not
\npersecuted, and where a person could find peace and solace within the melodies.
\nMusic & Composition<\/p>\n
4. The adaptation of\u00a0Franz Schubert\u2019s Piano Trio No. 2 \u2013 Andante con moto\u00a0is a
\nstandout track. Why Schubert? What made this piece the right one to
\nreinterpret?
\nIt was Karola\u2019s idea. Just like with our previous classical adaptations, she felt this piece would
\nbe suitable for reinterpretation in a black metal style, in the signature WitcheR sound. I
\nbelieve she was absolutely right. The piece already carries an incredible atmosphere on its
\nown, and on top of that, it fits perfectly as the closing track of the album.<\/p>\n
5. When composing, which usually comes first for WitcheR \u2014 the\u00a0orchestral
\nvision\u00a0or the\u00a0black metal foundation?
\nThe first and most important element that emerges is always the central melody. We consider
\nit crucial that only themes that are memorable and strong on their own make it onto the<\/p>\n
album. Once these are established, Karola develops the accompanying arrangements, and only
\nafter that does the black metal foundation come into play.<\/p>\n
6. The atmosphere in your music is ritualistic and cinematic. Do you picture specific
\nlandscapes, characters, or stories while composing?
\nIt\u2019s not typical for us, but for Karola, it\u2019s quite common that some melodies are born at night,
\neven during sleep. She practically dreams them into existence. I believe our surroundings play
\nan important role in this process. We are surrounded by vast forests, mountains, and valleys,
\nand nature serves as a huge source of inspiration for us.
\nThemes & Folklore<\/p>\n
7. Witchcraft, Hungarian folklore, and\u00a0resistance to the modern world\u00a0are
\nrecurring topics in your lyrics. How does folklore influence your philosophy as a
\nband?
\nThat\u2019s an interesting question. We live in an environment where witchcraft is still a living
\nbelief system among the older generations. The way these elders live and perceive the world
\nprovides us with enormous inspiration for our lyrics. Sadly, there are very few of them left,
\nand this gives us a sense of mission to try to keep these traditions alive through our music,
\nlyrics, and album artwork.<\/p>\n
8. Many modern bands embrace technology as an essential tool. Yet your themes
\nresist modernization. Where is the line drawn between using technology and
\nrejecting it as a concept?
\nOur issue isn\u2019t with technology itself or technological progress. Our resistance is more
\nideological. We cannot accept the way an increasing part of modern society thinks, how
\nanything that comes from the past is immediately rejected, even persecuted. I don\u2019t know how
\nit is in America, but in Europe, if you are proud of your roots and your past, you can quickly
\nbe seen as an enemy by many. We believe this is wrong, and it\u2019s this form of resistance that is
\nexpressed through WitcheR. I also think black metal is the most suitable genre for this, as it
\nhas always been about respect for our ancestors. Just look at the Norwegian black metal bands
\nof the 1990s.
\nSound & Production<\/p>\n
9. \u00d6r\u00f6kl\u00e9t\u00a0was fully\u00a0recorded, mixed, and mastered by the band\u00a0at Vrag\u2019s Forest
\nStudio. How does complete control of production enhance your artistic
\nexpression?
\nOver the past few years, we\u2019ve spent a lot of time and money developing our own studio to a
\nlevel where we can produce recordings of acceptable quality. This gives us a huge advantage
\nbecause we aren\u2019t bound by time constraints. I get very frustrated if I can\u2019t work on my music
\nat my own pace. If I want, I can make changes even months after the recordings. In a
\ntraditional studio, this wouldn\u2019t be possible – or it would come with significant extra costs.<\/p>\n
We can freely experiment with sounds and tempos, whenever we feel like it, not just when
\nwe\u2019re required to. This freedom is invaluable for our creativity.<\/p>\n
10. Creating such atmospheric depth requires strong synergy. What is your creative
\ndynamic as a duo when sculpting these layers of sound?
\nIt\u2019s interesting, we\u2019ve never been asked this question before, even though it\u2019s very important.
\nIn life, Karola and I are complete opposites, yet creatively we have an incredible synergy.
\nThis doesn\u2019t mean we don\u2019t have minor disagreements while writing songs, but we share the
\nsame vision for the final result. We work together very efficiently, and Karola helps me a lot
\nsince she\u2019s a trained musician, whereas I play music by ear.
\nInfluences & Evolution<\/p>\n
11. Summoning, early Dimmu Borgir, and Wolves in the Throne Room are credited
\nas inspirations. Today, do you feel WitcheR influences its own creative direction
\nmore than outside bands?
\nI believe so. Summoning and early Dimmu Borgir have certainly been very important
\ninfluences, but over time, I think we\u2019ve managed to develop a unique atmosphere that makes
\nWitcheR immediately recognizable. This wasn\u2019t a conscious decision on our part – it\u2019s more
\nthe result of our ongoing evolution.<\/p>\n
12. Since forming in 2010, how has your understanding of darkness, melancholy, and
\natmosphere evolved?
\nFifteen years is a long time, so in many ways, I think it\u2019s natural that we\u2019ve grown in every
\naspect. Yet one thing hasn\u2019t changed: our approach. Even today, creation remains our primary
\nfocus: writing better songs and leaving something lasting behind. Over these fifteen years,
\nwe\u2019ve developed a lot as musicians, as people, and in terms of recording quality. These
\nchanges have shaped us to some extent, but anyone listening to our first demo and our latest
\nalbum can still clearly feel the connection. This stubborn persistence is something that is very
\nimportant to us in life as well.
\nArtwork & Aesthetic<\/p>\n
13. The artwork by\u00a0Grafit & Hamu Artworks\u00a0visually mirrors the album\u2019s mystical
\nthemes. What role does visual art play in enhancing your music\u2019s message?
\nA strong album cover plays a huge role in a record\u2019s success. This is especially important
\ntoday, and for us, it was crucial that it wasn\u2019t an AI-generated image, but a piece created by a
\nreal artist. This artwork was made by Bal\u00e1zs P\u00e9nzes (Grafit & Hamu Artworks), an incredibly
\ntalented Hungarian artist, and I think he did a fantastic job. In terms of both the message and
\nthe atmosphere, he managed to elevate the album to a higher level. This is the fourth time
\nwe\u2019ve worked with Bal\u00e1zs, and we\u2019re so on the same wavelength that he\u2019s delivered his best
\nwork for us every single time. In the future, we want to work only with him!<\/p>\n
14. If\u00a0\u00d6r\u00f6kl\u00e9t\u00a0could be experienced beyond audio \u2014 as a film, poem, or ritual \u2014 how
\nwould it manifest?
