Swedish melodic death metal newcomers Beyond Defiance discuss the origins of the band, the message behind *Utopia*, their home-studio approach, influences ranging from Dark Tranquillity to Dimmu Borgir, and plans to take their music to the stage in 2027.
Sweden has given the metal world some of melodic death metal’s most influential bands, and **Beyond Defiance** is hoping to add a new chapter to that history with its debut album, ***Utopia***.
Released independently on **August 14, 2026**, *Utopia* combines the melodic foundations associated with the classic Gothenburg sound with elements of thrash metal, black metal, crushing guitar work, ferocious growls and atmospheric passages.
But beneath the aggression is a record heavily influenced by what Beyond Defiance sees happening in the world around them.
During a recent interview with **KJAG Radio / The Mic**, the Swedish trio explained that *Utopia* was created largely as a reaction to war, oppression and the political forces affecting ordinary people across the globe.
“The album *Utopia* is mainly written as a reaction to all the horrible wars and oppression that’s plaguing the world today,” the band explained, adding that there is also “a bit of medieval/Viking stuff” mixed into the record.
## A BAND THAT STARTED ALMOST BY ACCIDENT
Beyond Defiance consists of **Lars Karlsen, Torbjörn Andersson and Sven Erik Fritiofsson**, but the band’s formation in the spring of 2025 wasn’t originally part of some carefully designed master plan.
“The start of the band was a bit of a coincidence,” the group said.
Sven and Torbjörn had previously been playing together in a traditional heavy metal band, but the project lost momentum after the departure of both its vocalist and bassist.
Knowing Lars was a capable vocalist, they approached him about joining.
That simple decision quickly changed the direction of the music.
“Soon after that we started working on some songs and immediately realized that we all wanted to go towards a heavier sound.”
That heavier direction ultimately became Beyond Defiance.
Even more impressive is how quickly the trio moved from forming the band to completing an entire full-length debut.
According to Beyond Defiance, one reason was that all three musicians discovered almost immediately that they shared a similar vision.
“We had a very similar approach to what we wanted to achieve, and we actually did the pre-production of the songs simultaneously with writing and composing them.”
All three members have home studios, allowing ideas and recording projects to be passed back and forth as the songs evolved.
“When we agreed that we were on the right path, we did the final tracking,” they explained. “Since there are, at least for now, only three of us, it was rather fast work.”
Instead of finishing one track before beginning another, Beyond Defiance worked on several songs simultaneously.
“The whole time we worked on several songs in parallel, so it was a bit hectic, but also very fun to hear it evolve.”
## THE GOTHENBURG FOUNDATION
It doesn’t take long when discussing Beyond Defiance before some major names in Swedish metal enter the conversation.
The band cites influences including **Dark Tranquillity**, **Arch Enemy** and **Sylosis**, and those comparisons have already followed Beyond Defiance as listeners discover *Utopia*.
The band is comfortable with those associations—as long as listeners understand that imitation isn’t the objective.
“Those bands are some of the main influences for us, mainly in the way we arrange the songs,” Beyond Defiance said. “We are not trying to duplicate their sounds, but instead we try to build our own character within the same ballpark, so to speak.”
The Gothenburg melodic death metal tradition provides the foundation, but each member brings additional influences into the mix.
“The roots are always there as an inspiration, although we also try to carve our own way from there.”
Sven’s background as a thrash metal guitarist naturally finds its way into some of the guitar work.
Black metal influences emerge in another area.
“As for black metal, that’s more of an inspiration for Lars’ growls, especially **Dimmu Borgir**, even if that maybe is not always so obvious.”
That combination helps explain why *Utopia* can move from punishing aggression into soaring melodic and atmospheric passages.
For Beyond Defiance, those changes aren’t dictated by a formula.
They are dictated by the song.
“It’s the ‘soul’ of the song that decides it all,” the band said. “Sometimes the feeling is that you need some screaming to get the message through.”
The hope is that listeners hear those contrasts not simply as changes in musical intensity, but as another way to strengthen the meaning behind the songs.
## WHAT DOES *UTOPIA* REALLY MEAN?
Calling a melodic death metal album ***Utopia*** immediately creates a contradiction.
That contradiction is intentional.
Rather than describing an ideal world, the title reflects how far reality can appear from one.
“It reflects the topic of many of the songs relating to the state of the world, where the hopes for freedom and peace are being shattered by megalomaniac leaders who want to build empires while the people are suffering.”
That worldview runs through much of the album.
The lyrics, however, aren’t strictly political or conceptual.
They come from a mixture of personal observations, conversations and current events.
“The lyrics are a mix from a personal point of view, talking to friends and family and listening to the news,” the band explained.
“All of that is combined into trying to make songs that are here and now for the most part.”
The writing process involves attempting to place themselves inside the circumstances being described.
“When the songwriting starts, the point is to try to imagine oneself in that position, and then the pencil just goes off by itself.”
The result is music that may address large global issues but still attempts to connect with listeners on an emotional level.
## BUILDING *UTOPIA* AT HOME
Beyond Defiance also took an intensely DIY approach to making its debut.
Rather than moving into a commercial recording studio, *Utopia* was recorded in the members’ own home studios.
**Sven Erik Fritiofsson** handled the mixing and mastering, with plenty of input from his bandmates.
The arrangement gave the musicians almost complete freedom.
“The advantages are that we have full control over the entire process and can take the time it needs without any deadlines or budget restrictions.”
But unlimited time can create its own problem.
“The lack of deadlines can easily result in a never-ending loop of, ‘Maybe it will be better if we just…’”
The band readily admits none of its members are professional audio engineers, making the production of *Utopia* a learning experience alongside the songwriting.
“It is a constant learning process.”
Sometimes discovering a new mixing tool or technique meant returning to material the group thought was already complete.
“Finding a new tool or process that leads to an improved mix leads to going back and adjusting every song accordingly,” they said.
There was, however, an important benefit.
“It also keeps the sound consistent throughout the entire album.”
## “CRY” AND “IMPOSTER”
Beyond Defiance introduced listeners to *Utopia* visually through the singles **“Cry”** and **“Imposter.”**
The official video for “Cry” arrived ahead of the album, while “Imposter” accompanied the full release.
Choosing which songs should represent a debut record wasn’t easy.
“We did some serious head-scratching to choose,” the band admitted.
Personal favorites weren’t the only consideration.
“Apart from what songs we personally liked best, we also tried to judge what would have the best impact on the audience.”
And, as almost every musician eventually learns, the songs artists love most aren’t necessarily the ones audiences immediately embrace.
“As always, it’s not always the songs we ourselves like best that sit well with others.”
## HOW A BEYOND DEFIANCE SONG IS BUILT
While Beyond Defiance operates collaboratively, many songs begin with Lars.
“Most often it starts with Lars getting inspiration for a song and throwing together a rough demo of his idea.”
Even at that early stage, the relationship between clean vocals and growls is frequently established.
“The selection of when to growl and when to sing is usually already in place this early.”
Those vocal decisions are driven by both lyrical content and the emotional atmosphere of different sections.
From there, Sven works on refining the original guitar riffs.
Torbjörn then becomes part of developing the arrangement and smaller details.
“Once the foundations are set, we make a new round of recordings to be used in the final production with all the added vocal and guitar layers.”
That collaborative process helped the band move rapidly enough to complete a full-length album little more than a year after Beyond Defiance was formed.
## TAKING BEYOND DEFIANCE FROM THE STUDIO TO THE STAGE
With *Utopia* now released, Beyond Defiance is already looking beyond its debut.
“A bit of it all,” the band said when asked whether its immediate priority was touring, promoting *Utopia* or recording more music.
The group has begun preparing itself to become a live band with plans to start performing shows in **early 2027**.
“In order to build an audience we need to push this release.”
But new material could arrive even sooner.
Beyond Defiance is considering releasing another **single or possibly an EP toward the end of 2026**.
A second full-length record is also already being discussed for the **spring or summer of 2027**.
If the group follows its long-term vision, listeners should expect a substantial amount of new music.
“Our aim is to release new music regularly, at least one full album per year, and of course build a solid reputation as a live band.”
## REACHING METAL FANS IN THE UNITED STATES
Beyond Defiance may have been born in Sweden, but the band is clearly thinking internationally.
For American metal fans discovering the trio through *Utopia*, Beyond Defiance hopes the combination of groove, aggression and subject matter translates regardless of geography.
“We hope the American listeners will feel the groove and can relate to what the songs are about.”
Perhaps more importantly, they want the heaviness to offer listeners a release from some of the same frustrations that inspired the record.
“We hope they might find some release in their minds, because sometimes you just got to let go of it all and just scream out your frustration in order to get relief.”
That may be the clearest explanation of *Utopia*.
The record isn’t attempting to pretend the world is perfect.
It is music created because it isn’t.
## WHERE DOES BEYOND DEFIANCE GO FROM HERE?
Melodic death metal comes with decades of history behind it, especially for a band emerging from Sweden.
Beyond Defiance respects that lineage but doesn’t want to remain trapped inside it.
“We hope we can bring a new flavor to the genre and expand the limits of what can be done without deviating too much from the foundations.”
For a group formed only in 2025, those are ambitious goals.
But after independently writing, recording, producing and releasing an entire debut album in little more than a year, Beyond Defiance has already demonstrated that ambition isn’t something the trio appears to lack.
Now comes the next challenge: getting *Utopia* into more ears, taking Beyond Defiance onto the stage and proving the band can turn its studio identity into a live one.
If the members have their way, *Utopia* won’t be remembered simply as the arrival of Beyond Defiance.
It will be remembered as the beginning.
