CROWJANE
Tackles James Brown In Her Unnerving Version Of
“It’s A Man’s World”
Debut Album Mater Dolorosa Out Now
Following the release of her debut album MATER DOLOROSA via Kitten Robot Records in September, LA-based experimental post-punk artist CROWJANE is now premiering the new video for her show-stopping and unnerving cover of James Brown’s “It’s A Man’s Man’s Man’s World” (which she shortened to “It’s A Man’s World”) via Post-Punk.com.
Adopting the gruff delivery of the James Brown original but amplifying its urgency, CrowJane grapples with the emotion and turns the sentiment on its head. While James Brown reveled in patriarchy of the lyrics, CrowJane instead absorbs the inherent chauvinism and inverts it. Inspired to cover the track after hearing avant pop band The Residents do a peculiar take on it, she knew she centered on the right song.
She tells Post-Punk.com, “Lyrically, it seemed fitting for everything I was trying to express, even though this song was sung by a man that was accused of assault and sexual harassment. For me, that doesn’t take away the meaning of the words, especially if and when it is coming from a femme perspective or someone that has felt oppression/discrimination. ALSO, I came to find in research that this song was written in partnership and possibly entirely by Betty Jean Newsome who wrote the lyrics based on her own observations of the relations between the sexes.”

Hailed by the media as an incendiary and iconoclastic album, Mater Dolorosa has created a bit of a stir. Infrared Magazine quipped, “In a year where we have had so much bad shit going on, it is great for an artist to come out of left field and hit so hard,” calling it a “Powerful debut album.” Ghettoblaster stated that “Mater Dolorosa is a heady and heavy release that’s allowed CrowJane the freedom to express every ounce of emotion from track to track.” Meanwhile, ReGen Magazine called CrowJane’s music “darkly surreal,” and Rock N Blues Magazine noted that Mater Dolorsa was “Like nothing you’ve ever listened to before.”
