Real McKenzies Interview

The Real McKenzies: Keeping the Scottish Torch Burning with On Yer Bike

For more than three decades, The Real McKenzies have stood as one of the most influential and enduring forces in Celtic punk music. Long before bagpipes and kilts became commonplace in punk rock circles, the Vancouver-based outfit was blazing its own trail, combining traditional Scottish culture, history, and folklore with the raw energy and rebellious spirit of punk rock.

Now, with the release of their latest album, On Yer Bike, the band continues a mission that has defined their career since the early 1990s: preserving and celebrating Scottish heritage while delivering high-energy music designed to unite audiences around the world. Led by founding frontman Paul McKenzie, the band has never viewed music as mere entertainment. Instead, it serves as a vehicle for storytelling, historical education, cultural preservation, healthy living, and what McKenzie affectionately calls “Rock & Roll Celtic Punk Partydom.”

In this exclusive interview with The Jiggy Jaguar Radio Program, McKenzie discusses the deeper meaning behind On Yer Bike, the importance of history in songwriting, the role of bagpipes in Celtic culture, the band’s commitment to positive energy and healthy living, and why The Real McKenzies remain dedicated to illuminating what he describes as the “Glorious Scottish Torch” for future generations.

From ancient legends and historical truths to modern challenges and timeless lessons, this conversation offers a fascinating look inside the mind of one of Celtic punk’s true pioneers.

Greetings. Here are some answers to these pertinent questions:
1.The mindset was for all the individuals involved in the making of this new album to test their craft to the max. and then kick it up a notch or three. This was ( is ) a prerequisite for all involved being that we are now free agents.
2. ON YER BIKE. Is a Scots/Celt term for
“ Get attah heah” “Piss Off” …
It can also be used to say come join me for an exciting healthy bicycle adventure.
I own lots of bikes… yesssssss…ride ‘em!!!
3. That would have to be the essence of
Scots/ Canadian/ Celtic culture in terms of song and history which in many cases are one and the same. We have helped to bring to light, a mere thimble full of what is a vast deep ancient well of culture and history. We are very honored and proud to have had the opportunity to do this, and will continue to do so in a presentation of mirth, glee, positive energy and
ROCK & ROLL CELTIC PUNK PARTYDOM.
4. Many of the elements in this question were as prevalent way back in the days of ancient lore as they are today. Of corse our environment has changed drastically and dramatically, however we find that people ( in essence )have remained fundamentally the same. We like to remind them of this by relating ancient texts in a modern format to be presented to all who choose to become involved with it. Everyone is welcome. Regardless.
4. We choose the topics that interest us as a band, of which there are so very many. I especially enjoy taking major events documented in history and pairing them up  along side of prevalent events today. After all… history has a tendency of repeating itself.
5. It is based on a collective need for proper nutrition for maximum energy to perform on and off stage for T R McK.’s  We do NOT support processed food and the systematic plan to poison people for profit is absolutely abhorrent . We support local organics and healthy lifestyles. We chose to exemplify this idea and present it in a fun filled way so as not to preach or intimidate.  Lead by example! Punk Rock Rules!
6.A few years/ albums ago, we did a song about “ The Sauney Beane Clan”.
This “ legend” as it turns out, has been completely debunked as propaganda implemented by the English Gov’t. with the sole & express purpose of attempting to irradicate the Scottish tourist trade at that time. But not before becoming a frighteningly realistic tale of incestuous cannibalism debauchery from the late 1700’s and on until today. Very scary.
TR McK’s have taken that legend and formed it into three takes in song form of that particular subject. A Sauney Bean trilogy.
7. See # 6. Having had delved into lots of world history, we find an irresistible urge to bring some of the more interesting ones to light using a vehicle of music and verse.
8. The bagpipes are as ancient as Celtic Culture itself. You can track the Celts geographically throughout history by how many cultures have the bagpipes still visible and prevalent within their existing society today. As a result we now have many different types of pipes but are all of a fundamentally similar design.
They have been used for entertainment, and to muster the masses against a common foe and to strike fear in the enemy before battle hence ( as just one of many examples )
“ The Screaming Women from Hell”. a description of Highland pipers by many of the Kaisers soldiers who were terrified back in WW I. The Bagpipe is a fundamental foundation but not an exclusive instrument of which TRMcK’s employ on a regular basis.
9. Yes. The truth just might surprise you.
History speaks for itself!
“ The poop is in th’ puddin’ “. As they say.
We R McK’s. are in full support of all of the bands who choose to proliferate and popularize all kinds of music in a healthy positive manner.
10. To tell true. There are so many stories to be told of all the elements of touring/ performing with so many bands both famous and infamous. It would be a gargantuan task to attempt to do so here/ now. You’ll have to wait for the “ tell all “ book to be published.
11. YES. Very much so. The world has changed drastically in terms of borders/ security/ and social awareness and acceptability since the late 70’s.
Many significant world events have shaped what is now known as a
“ Brave New World” (A. H.) there are still some old school remnants lurking, however today they are few and far between.
12. Rebel music has been played to rouse the masses against abusive authority. It is as old as tyranny itself. There are many elements portrayed and many different motives.
I can’t speak for all, but l can speak for TR McK’s. who will remain true to our campaign of altruistic high energy alternative musical
collaboration.
14. Good health of body/ mind/ spirit!
There are no dictators in our band. Everyone has a say in everything. All opinions are important and are reviewed in an arena of an  intellectually critical thought process!
There are no acceptions.
Having had established that I wish to add that there can always be an acception to the rule
and that rules can be meant to be broken.
Carry on!!! Furthermore, it has been, and is an elating experience to be bestowed with the opportunity of being a role model for future generations. Of late, we have been once again reminded of the enormous responsibility one must recognize and be accountable in assuming culpability for actions in an attempt to become a good example of what can be ,if desired.
15. I must agree in terms of sound quality on this album. This album has an all inclusive severely infectious sound proving, without question that we are a Band!!! Having had stated this,  the engineering and production crew went well above & beyond the call of duty and once again l wish to refer to one of many R McK’s anicdotes
“ The poop is in th’ puddin’.”!!!
16. We ARE Stomp.
    Stomp are us.
   ‘ Nuff said.
17. In my opinion , it was only a matter of time. Celtic sound and culture so deeply rooted in most mainstream ( and not so mainstream) music both ancient and modern. What is important now to us is that we all support one another. This is inclusive and very important not just for musicians, but EVERYONE involved. United we stand.
Divided we fall. Let us not fall!
18. ALL of them. Once you hear the sounds, and read the lyrics the here/ now & why will become crystal clear. To be reminded that  health, education, fitness and gleeful mirth is of immense importance for a positive existence. To exemplify this just one of our many goals, not only on this, but with future endeavours.
All we really ask of our fans and associates is to be respectful and nice, and ultimately responsible for their actions.
It is proven that every action has a reaction,
both physically and mentally. Think about it!
19. We are proud of helping people. As stated we are all fundamentally generous altruistically chaotic good/ bad, but not evil characters.
Our actions and music have proven to be instrumental in assisting all sorts of people in many different situations. Most of which are so unique and specifically individual that we are all collectively elated to have had the opportunity to assist folks on their journey through both joyous and difficult times and are fit and ready for anything the future will bestow.
Ultimately it’s all about the people, for without them, we are nothing!
20. Positive energy!
As stated, we RMCk’s seem to have a unique agenda that may differ from others.
Although there are many monitary issues to be seriously considered in order to continue this madcap escapade, it is not by any means our primary motivation. I have always had a vision and l have the crew to materialize this both now and in the future, that vision is to spread as much positive energy and awareness as humanly possible for as long as possible.
We need this more now than ever as a people , in my opinion, but then again…
We always did. Don’t we? AOK!!! Let’s GO!!!
20. There are so very many pitfalls in Band life. Potentially dangerous variables of which aren’t initially visibly apparent, but can prove to be extremely devastating.
So many elements in life that can sidetrack or derail an idea. They are predominantly all blatantly obvious, so a full description doesn’t seem applicable thus necessary. I however, have experienced all or most of them to one degree or another seeing as l have been professionally involved since 1974. I feel most fortunate, blessed if you will, to be here with a fantastic, stellar band and crew all of whom l have the most respect and affection for. When you have a strong integral foundation, great things can be built to last centuries, millennia, eternity or longer.
21. As important as Scottish everythingdom is of immense importance to TRMcK’s
We have also touched upon other important elements involving interesting aspects of life, but not to detract from our ultimate fundamental goal to spark The Glorious Scottish Torch and keep the flame alive, bright and strong to illuminate the paths of glory for those who wish to travel them.
22. For most part, we have a fine relationship with all individuals we have had contact with both personally and professionally.
24. Yes! MANY surprises, but if l were to tell… they wouldn’t be surprises anymore now would they. Come to the show and see for yourselves.
25. Stomp Records has what you need.
We have folks who deal with our social media issues in terms of providing information involving shows and promotional notification. At this point l wish to extend a warm welcome to all who wish to be brave and courageously strong  enough to endure the
Real McKenzies Experience. Come and form your own opinions on the matter, and don’t forget to bring a can of sardines and your MUTHAH!!! Ha ha ha… thank you.

A Legacy Built on History, Heritage, and Positive Energy

After more than thirty years of touring, recording, and championing Celtic culture across the globe, The Real McKenzies show no signs of slowing down.

Throughout our conversation, Paul McKenzie repeatedly returned to themes of history, community, education, health, responsibility, and positive energy. Whether discussing the historical inspiration behind the band’s songs, the importance of supporting local organic food, or the enduring power of bagpipe-driven punk rock, one message remained clear: The Real McKenzies are committed to leaving a lasting impact that extends far beyond music.

On Yer Bike is more than just another album in a long-running catalog. It represents a renewed sense of freedom, creative ambition, and collective purpose for a band that continues to evolve while remaining firmly rooted in its Scottish heritage. As McKenzie explained, every member of the group pushed themselves to new heights during the album’s creation, resulting in what he believes is one of the strongest and most cohesive recordings of the band’s career.

For longtime fans and newcomers alike, The Real McKenzies invite everyone to join the journey, embrace the music, learn from history, and carry forward a spirit of respect, unity, and celebration.

As McKenzie puts it best:

“United we stand. Divided we fall.”

And if you’re ready for the full Real McKenzies experience, there is only one thing left to do:

Grab your friends, bring your sense of adventure, head to a show, and discover for yourself what three decades of Celtic punk passion sounds like.
