5. Interview Questions
1. “What’s a common myth about Independent Artists and can you debunk it?
I don’t know any common myths right off hand about independent artists.  It’s more like the reality they have to face in really getting their music heard commercially if they really pursue that course.  About the only myth that comes to mind if any is that their music isn’t as worth of airplay as A-list artist or stars; occasionally the music of some indie artists has far more appeal than some A-listers.
2. “What advice would you give to someone wanting to enter the music industry?”
Sharpen your musical skills and have patience.  There’s several million musicians throughout the world seeking to be heard on the major music streaming services, and only a small percentage of those really get in through the door as far as having many thousands or even millions of listens for a given song, whether it’s as a single or on an EP or album.  Sharpening you musical skills, including songwriting, will promote a heartfelt professional sound to stand out from the crowd, as well as to appreciate your own music apart from an audience.  And it can take years, not months, to build up to success, such as building an awareness among the public about your music.  Audiences have to get to know you first in conjunction with a learning curve for upcoming artists in effectively marketing their music.  If you’re just playing open mics for fun and only doing it locally, then all this wouldn’t really apply.  It depends on how high your aspirations are.
3. “Are there any resources or even advice that have really helped you on your journey?”
Support from or camaraderie with fellow musicians.
4. “What has been your biggest accomplishment in your career thus far?”
Getting heard on radio, both FM and internet.  It’s not reached critical mass yet, but at least getting on to several radio stations or programs is better than nothing, at least in the early stages.
5. “What do you wish you had known when you started out?”
An emphasis on marketing/PR.  A good song is one term of the equation, yet the other term is marketing/PR.  If you don’t actively promote your songs, whether through a PR agency the specializes in music promotion, or other similar means, the song likely won’t have the reach.  Don’t take for granted that the song by itself will carry the day.
6. “What led you to becoming a singer-songwriter?”
.Instilled at birth.  I don’t think I “became” a singer-songwriter, rather I was born to be one, whether professionally or just as a hobby.
7. “What do you think is your unique skill(s) that has helped you become successful?”
Being able to play several instruments, rather than being focused exclusively one one.  I can play keyboards, rhythm guitar, percussion, and can sing.  It provides a wide musical perspective that opens up more possibilities for songwriting and performing.
8. “How was your journey to what you do
Now?”
Somewhat of a roller coaster ride, with twists and turns and peaks and valleys, in terms of the music as an art and business.  Fortunately nothing too bumpy or dramatic.
9. “How did this project begin?”
My most recent project, the This Town EP, began after I did a cover of Nanci Griffith’s “Love at the Five and Dime”.  She was among several songwriters, especially involving folk music, who inspired my music during my formative years.  When I heard that she had died back in 2021, I experienced a bit of grief over the loss.  So the cover of her song as such was a tribute to her and her musical legacy.  It generated songwriting momentum that I hadn’t had in years, whereby the momentum got me to subsequently do the This Town EP.
10. “What makes this project different from “past projects?”
It’s more folk rock, whereby it incorporates more acoustic guitar, and less of a synth sound.
11. “What’s the inspiration behind this project?”
Please refer to response to question above.
12. “What word or phrase would you use to describe this project?”
A collection of folk songs about family and community.
13. “How can listeners get in touch with or support you?”
Please visit rossdavismusic.com–my music website–which provides info about my music past, present, and future; there’s also a link on there to contact me regarding the music.
14. “What is coming up for you in the near future?”
Possibly another EP or small album within the next year or two.
15. “Many people believe that becoming a musical artist is challenging to the point it
becomes overwhelming and too much to handle. Why do you think people believe that?”
16. “What’s the most common reason for people failing or giving up?”
Lack of courage, encouragement from others, or both.
17. “What is your favorite word?”
Peace
18. “What are you not very good at?”
Remember people’s names, unless I see run into them often.
19. “If you could have one superpower, what would it be?”
Flying like Superman does.
20. “If you were a type of food, what type of food would you be?”
Cherry pie.
21. “If you could switch lives with someone for a day, who would you choose?”
Mark Twain.
