FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Spit On Your Grave Unleashes Brutal New Album Arkanum and Official Video for Single “The Infection”
Death Metal powerhouse Spit On Your Grave has released their latest full-length album, Arkanum, out now through Concreto Records. Alongside the album release, the band dropped a brutal official video for the lead single, “The Infection,” showcasing their unrelenting sound. Known for a style that appeals to fans of The Black Dahlia Murder, Kataklysm, and Behemoth, Spit On Your Grave delivers a renewed energy and darker edge with Arkanum.
Formed in Monterrey, N.L., in 2012, Spit On Your Grave (S.O.Y.G) has gained respect across the Death Metal scene for their raw power and fierce live performances, sharing stages with legends such as Cannibal Corpse, Nile, Chelsea Grin, Nervosa, Sepultura, Rotting Christ, and Cattle Decapitation. Their discography includes Existential Murderer (2014) and the EP Unblessed (2015), leading up to 2018’s The Night of the Women’s Rites. Now, with Arkanum, S.O.Y.G brings a polished but punishing sound that reflects their evolution.
The band’s lineup features founding member and bassist Elizabeth Castillo, with Caro Saturni and Lizbeth Chavez on guitars, Nico Garza on drums, and Marlene Muñoz on vocals, together driving the brutal intensity fans have come to expect. “The Infection” video captures their trademark aggression and is a must-watch for anyone looking to experience the visceral energy of Spit On Your Grave.
Arkanum is available now on all major streaming platforms.

**END OF PRESS RELEASE**
A. The New Album: Arkanum
1. “Arkanum” means a profound secret or mystery. What is the central secret, mystery, or esoteric knowledge that this album explores or unveils?
It is a secret… well, in a way it is and in a way it isn’t. The idea is to lead the listener to question what they have been doing up to this point in their life and whether those decisions were truly their own or influenced by someone else.
It is a journey of destroying what you believed you were. That hidden part inside you, that secret, is different for everyone. Each listener may discover their own meaning.
2. This album is described as having a “polished but punishing sound” and a “darker edge.” How did you achieve this balance between technical precision and raw, brutal energy in the studio?
A lot of it was experimentation while searching for the sound we wanted. That process can be difficult when you don’t yet know exactly where you want to arrive, but once you find it you realize that was the sound you were looking for all along.
Our producer, Charles A. Leal, helped us a lot during that process. He challenged us to improve and push past our limits to reach a stronger and more defined sound.
3. How does Arkanum represent an evolution from The Night of the Women’s Rites (2018)? What did you consciously set out to do differently this time?
Each album has a specific goal depending on the stage of the band and the lineup at that moment.
With Arkanum, we wanted to question who S.O.Y.G. is now and what we truly wanted to sound like and express as a band.
4. As a full-length album, does Arkanum tell a larger story or explore a unified theme across its tracks, or is each song a separate brutal chapter?
All the songs actually follow a specific order in the story they tell.
Someone could even try to guess the real order of that story, because it is not necessarily the same order as the album tracklist. Each song tells its own story, but together they complete the entire journey.
B. The Single & Video: The Infection
5. Why was “The Infection” chosen as the lead single and video to introduce Arkanum? What about this track encapsulates the album’s core message or sound?
We believe The Infection reflects the overall sound of the album very well. It works almost like a teaser or a taste of what you will find throughout the entire record.
You could think of it like a menu preview of the full experience of Arkanum.
6. The video for “The Infection” is noted for its aggression. What was the creative concept behind the visuals, and how does it translate the song’s thematic “infection” into imagery?
Even though the song speaks in a figurative way, we are very inspired by mysticism and fantasy.
In the video, the main character is slowly suffering the intoxication or infection caused by someone else. Both him and the band gradually begin to become infected by those external thoughts or influences until they transform into completely different people.
7. Lyrically, what is “The Infection”? Is it a literal plague, a societal sickness, a corrupting ideology, or a more personal corruption?
It is more of a personal corruption. In a broader sense, the Enchantress represents a person who manipulates you and pushes you to think, say, or do things that were never really part of you.
You slowly become a puppet and lose the essence of who you were before.
C. Lineup, Dynamics & The S.O.Y.G. Sound
8. Spit On Your Grave has a formidable, majority-women lineup. How does this dynamic influence the band’s creative process and energy?
For us it feels very natural. We do not feel that our creative process is influenced by the gender of the members.
We simply work in the way that functions best for us as musicians and as a band.
9. Elizabeth, as a founding member since 2012, how have you seen the band’s vision and sonic identity solidify over the years, culminating in Arkanum?
The band has gone through many stages of exploration and experimentation. From the very beginning we explored our influences within death metal while trying to find our own sound.
Over the years, through lineup changes, live performances, and studio work, that identity gradually became clearer and stronger.
Arkanum represents a stage of maturity and dedication. It is the result of more than a decade of musical and personal evolution. With this album we were able to integrate our influences more consciously with the essence of the band, creating a sound that feels more defined, darker, and more powerful.
10. Marlene, joining on vocals, what new dimension did you aim to bring to the S.O.Y.G. sound with your performance on Arkanum?
I like vocals to be dynamic because I think that adds a lot of character to the songs.
For Arkanum, one of my goals was to keep different tones and textures in the voice. Depending on whether a song is more brutal or more emotional, the vocal approach changes along with the intention behind it.
11. The band’s sound bridges influences from bands like The Black Dahlia Murder, Kataklysm, and Behemoth. How do you fuse these influences into a cohesive S.O.Y.G. identity?
Since everyone participates in the songwriting process, it is difficult to trace the sound back to one specific influence.
We do not take a single band as a reference. Instead, we try to create something that represents us while still staying rooted in extreme metal and maintaining our own essence.
D. The Monterrey Scene & Live Ascendancy
12. Monterrey has a fierce metal scene. How has the city shaped your sound and work ethic?
There are many extreme metal bands in our city and it is a large and very supportive community.
The local scene has helped shape how we work as a band and the discipline we bring to what we do.
13. You’ve shared stages with legends like Cannibal Corpse, Nile, and Sepultura. What is the most important lesson you’ve learned from them?
We have learned that you do not need much to put on a great show.
Touring can be difficult, but once you step on stage all of that disappears. It also shows you that even the biggest bands face many of the same challenges as smaller or newer bands.
14. How do you prepare to bring the brutal and complex sound of Arkanum to the live stage?
We rehearse constantly. Depending on how close we are to a tour, it can be several times a week.
Even when we do not have upcoming shows, we try to keep rehearsing so we can continue improving the live performance.
E. Legacy, Identity & Breaking Boundaries
15. Has the meaning of the name Spit On Your Grave changed for you over the years?
Not really. It is something that has remained very consistent for us.
We still feel strongly identified with what the name represents and the attitude behind it.
16. Do you see the band as challenging preconceptions within death metal?
The biggest challenge is actually to ourselves.
We are constantly trying to create music that still represents who we are, even as we evolve over time. We are not the same people we were yesterday, and what you know today will change tomorrow.
17. With a discography spanning a decade, does Arkanum feel like a culmination or a new beginning?
It marks a new era. In terms of sound it could be called a new beginning, but in reality it is more like a rupture or awakening.
It forces you to reconfigure what you had been doing before and focus on reflecting who we are now both as people and as a band.
F. The Creative Process & Philosophical Brutality
18. Walk us through the typical songwriting process for a track on Arkanum.
Usually it starts with a riff, a draft, or a basic idea, and then we work on it together as a band until it evolves into the final song.
19. Death metal often explores dark themes. What is the line for S.O.Y.G. between exploring darkness and glorifying it?
We like to express our identity both as individuals and as a band.
For us it is about finding a balance between the brutality of death metal and something more immersive within the psyche. It is not just about making heavy music but about building a concept.
20. What is the one “Arkanum” you hope listeners take away after hearing the album?
We like the idea that listeners experience the album through their own perspective.
Art is not complete until the audience interacts with it. In that sense, the true meaning of Arkanum is also what the listener discovers within themselves.
G. Rapid Fire
21. What’s one non-metal artist or album the band appreciates?
We all draw inspiration from many different genres, from regional music and folklore to pop and even ancestral music.
We are a sea of influences, so it would be difficult to choose only one.
22. If Arkanum were a weapon, what would it be?
It would be a spell. Not something physical, but something magical. A form of energy, like a possession or a conjuration.
23. For a new listener: start with “The Infection” video or dive straight into the full album?
Personally, I prefer diving into the full album without even seeing who is playing.
Removing the visual references allows your mind to start from zero and experience the music without judging anything except the sound itself.
