Tomás Jackman Reinvents a Classic: Inside His Country Spin on “Karma Chameleon”

By a Rolling Stone–style contributor for KJAGRadio

There’s a fine line between honoring a classic and rewriting its DNA—and Irish country artist Tomás Jackman walks it with confidence. Taking on “Karma Chameleon,” the global hit made famous by Boy George and Culture Club, Jackman leans into nostalgia while carving out a distinctly modern country-folk identity.

The result? A track that doesn’t just revisit the past—it reframes it through storytelling, melody, and a heartfelt Irish lens.

🎙️ INTERVIEW: TOMÁS JACKMAN (“Karma Chameleon”)

🔥 OPENING / HOOK

What made you want to revisit this song?
Karma Chameleon was a song that was big in my teens and always had a space in my head.

Did you feel pressure taking on something so iconic?
I didn’t feel pressure taking on the song as my plan was to give it my own feel and sing it my way—and that’s how I wanted to record it.

🎶 THE REIMAGINE / CREATIVE PROCESS

How did you blend a modern country sound with such a well-known pop hit?
Blending the sound came pretty easy. I told my producer, Brien Kerrigan, what I had in mind and we went from there.

How do you balance honoring the original while making it your own?
Striking the balance came naturally.

Were there any musical changes you knew you wanted right away?
We had a tempo in mind and we knew we wanted that country feel to it.

🎤 VOCALS / STYLE

Did you approach the vocal performance differently?
I didn’t approach the recording any differently from previous recordings—I want my own distinct accent to still be heard.

What does your voice bring to the track?
I think it adds a little bit of an Irish country twist to the song.

📀 FOLLOW-UP TO “Only You”

How does this build on your previous release “Only You”?
“Only You” was another iconic pop song, and my approach to both of these was the same.

Are you carving out a niche reimagining classics?
There are a few songs on a long list I’d like to cover eventually, but I also have originals I want to get out there too.

🎧 AUDIENCE CONNECTION

What do longtime fans of the original think?
I’ve had a few longtime fans give me the nod of approval—which is always nice. They like that I kept the original structure intact and didn’t stray too far.

What about new listeners?
For anyone who’s never heard the song before, I’d like them to hear the range and variety in my repertoire.

🎼 ARTIST IDENTITY

How would you describe your sound?
A heartfelt country-folk sound with Irish soulful storytelling vibes.

What influences shaped this style?
It’s a blend of influences over the years. The foundation comes from traditional Irish storytelling—honest lyrics, plenty of emotion, and a strong melody.

🚀 CAREER / FUTURE

What’s next for you?
Since “Karma Chameleon,” I’ve released the Keith Whitley classic “Don’t Close Your Eyes,” and in March 2026 I released my self-penned track “Only Her”—a song about love, connection, and that person who changes everything.

Any more classics coming?
There are a few more classics I might record, but right now I’ve got some originals that need to escape.

🎯 PERSONALITY / DEEP CUTS

What surprised you most about the reaction?
The way some hardcore Boy George fans took a liking to it.

Was there a “this is happening” moment in your career?
I’ve never had just one moment—I’ve chipped away doing gigs in pubs and clubs, then got invited overseas on tours and met amazing musicians I now call friends.

📣 CLOSING / PROMO

Where can fans listen right now?
“Karma Chameleon,” along with all my recordings, is available on all streaming platforms.

Why should DJs add this track to rotation?
Because it connects. Radio is about songs that make people feel something. “Karma Chameleon” has that nostalgic memory, and my new song “Only Her” is a real love story. They fit radio—they’re relatable, and listeners pick up on that.

🎧 FINAL TAKE

Jackman’s version of “Karma Chameleon” isn’t just a cover—it’s a case study in how to reinterpret a cultural artifact without stripping it of its soul. By grounding the track in Irish storytelling tradition and modern country textures, he delivers something rare: familiarity that still feels fresh.

In a music landscape driven by reinvention, Tomás Jackman proves that sometimes the best way forward… is to respectfully look back.
