Model Stranger is a Chicago based alternative rock band that draws inspiration from the 60’s to 90’s era of Rock and Roll. The Chicago press dubbed them “rock n’ roll classicists” and describes them as “an eclectic synthesis of psychedelic grunge and classic rock.” The trio describes themselves as “an analog band living in a digital world.” Any lover of rock will feel at home with the band’s sound, while also experiencing a new and unique style. The band consists of vocalist and guitarist Stephen Francis, bassist Kevin James, and drummer Vincent Joseph.
Stephen and Kevin have been friends for over twenty years and played in a prog rock band together during high school. They played in the same circuit as Fall Out Boy and the Plain White T’s, appearing on the same bills for the latter. Time would eventually bring Stephen and Kevin to meet Vincent. At first Vincent was invited to be a hired gun for two shows—a headlining slot at the Metro and direct support for Our Lady Peace. This invite turned into a permanent stay, since after getting to know each other, the band says that it went from a “hired-gun to a full-time love affair.” Since then Model Stranger was born, and the trio has been rocking ever since.
All three band members were surrounded by music growing up. Stephen’s Aunt was a professional opera singer who would give him vocal lessons. One time his voice cracked and his brothers laughed. This turned him off to singing as a kid, so he gravitated toward the guitar. However, he’d have the last laugh, as now he’s the lead vocalist of Model Stranger. Kevin’s father played music professionally and toured throughout the country. He received his first bass from his father in 6th grade. Vincent always wanted to play drums as a kid, but his mother forced him to play piano. What seemed like the end of the world to an aspiring drummer turned into a helpful foundation, that turned into a “means to an end.” Needless to say, music courses through each band member’s veins. When listening or watching a performance of Model Stranger’s, one can easily feel the passion and skill pour out from each member.
Model Stranger is currently promoting their upcoming LP Phases. The first single “Breaks My Heart” proves the band’s skill. The song also show’s off the trio’s range and ability, as a softer bridge juxtaposes perfectly with the fast-paced verses and refrain. Incredible lyrics matched with solid rock turn this song into an instant classic. The second single “Pick Me” showcases the trio’s energy. The way Stephen inflexes his voice and has the notes ascent followed by the back-up vocals serves as perfect rising action to the refrain, which is infectious and will get stuck in your head all day. Both singles capture the essence of the band: The familiarity of classic rock blended with vocals and performances that can only exist in 2020.
What sets Model Stranger apart from other bands is how long they’ve been together. Anyone involved in the rock scene will know how rare it is for bands to stay together and remain active for over ten years, let alone have all the founding members.
