Finnish modern metal band Post Pulse is preparing to unleash its highly anticipated third full-length album Lupaus on May 29, and the band is already turning heads with the release of the album’s haunting title track. Blending crushing riffs, atmospheric melodies, and deeply personal storytelling, “Lupaus” marks the first time the band has ever recorded a song in Finnish — opening a powerful new creative chapter for the group.

The Finnish modern metal outfit Post Pulse is stepping into bold new territory with the release of their upcoming third full-length album, Lupaus, arriving May 29. Known for blending crushing heaviness with melodic depth and cinematic atmosphere, the Helsinki-based band is now pushing its sound further than ever before — and doing it in their native language for the very first time.

The album’s title track, “Lupaus” — Finnish for “Promise” — serves as both a statement and a warning. Dark, emotional, and brutally honest, the single dives into themes of addiction, fear, shame, violence, and death while showcasing the band’s evolution toward a more melodic and expansive sound.

Featuring members with backgrounds spanning multiple metal projects across Finland and the United States, Post Pulse has become a unique force in modern metal since forming in 2015.

A New Chapter for Post Pulse

According to drummer Anttoni Välimaa, the band’s sound has continuously evolved from aggressive progressive metal into something far more layered and emotionally dynamic.

“We call ourselves modern metal for now,” Välimaa explained. “We draw influences from everywhere — movies, series, classical music, electronic, pop, black metal. It’s a crazy mix of styles, but still a compact package. Our strength lies in writing catchy melodies and grooves that stay in your head all day.”

Guitarist, programmer, and primary songwriter Antti Karhu says the band has never believed in musical limitations.

“We’ve done brutal death metal, melodic progressive material, even cover songs,” Karhu said. “We do what feels good to us.”

That fearless mentality led directly to “Lupaus” becoming the band’s first-ever Finnish-language song.

The Meaning Behind “Lupaus”

Karhu describes the track as a tragic and deeply emotional story centered around regret and promises that may never be fulfilled.

“Someone in the story makes a promise based on regret and shame,” he explained. “And it’s a promise that’s very hard to keep.”

The lyrical inspiration comes from a deeply rooted reality in Finnish culture — generational alcohol abuse and the emotional destruction it leaves behind.

“When writing the lyrics, I first painted a peaceful Finnish idyll with red cottages,” Karhu said. “Then I slightly pulled back the curtain of one cottage, looked inside, and wrote down exactly what I saw.”

The emotional intensity of the song is amplified by vocalist Tapani Rantanen utilizing more clean vocals than on previous releases, giving the song a haunting melodic weight without sacrificing the heaviness fans expect.

Bigger Sound, Stronger Identity

The upcoming album continues the sonic progression heard on 2024’s Return to the Halls, where the band first began incorporating synth programming and more melodic textures into its music.

This time around, the band intentionally leaned into atmosphere and clarity.

“We made a conscious decision to add more melodies and layers,” Karhu said. “We cut down on weird distorted chords and focused more on production and sound.”

Drummer Anttoni Välimaa added that the band wanted the album to sound “modern, but human.”

“In modern metal today, everything is quantized and autotuned,” he said. “With Lupaus, the drums punch, the guitars and bass are thick, and the vocals sound cool as hell.”

The album was recorded, mixed, and produced by Juhis Kauppinen, known for his work with the Finnish band Merta. Mastering was handled by Miro Kiiski.

Visuals With a DIY Spirit

To accompany the release, Post Pulse unveiled a dark one-take performance video for “Lupaus,” directed and filmed by Allan Välimaa.

The band has built a reputation for producing DIY visuals for nearly every song they release.

“We’ve now released 31 videos out of 34 songs,” Karhu said. “We don’t care about massive budgets — we just want videos we’re happy with.”

Meanwhile, the album’s artwork was created by acclaimed artist Juuso Laatio, whose haunting visual style perfectly matches the album’s dark emotional atmosphere.

A 22-Minute Monster Awaits

While “Lupaus” may introduce listeners to the band’s melodic side, Post Pulse hasn’t abandoned ambition or experimentation.

The upcoming album reportedly contains a massive 22-minute track titled “The Hole,” something Karhu admits may surprise even longtime fans.

“Some friends told me parts of the album sound like old Dream Theater,” he laughed. “I didn’t see that coming.”

The band plans to perform the epic composition live in full during their album release show May 29 at Kuudes Linja.

Final Thoughts

With Lupaus, Post Pulse isn’t simply releasing another metal album — they’re expanding the emotional and sonic boundaries of what modern metal can be. Heavy yet melodic, brutal yet cinematic, the record promises to challenge listeners while pulling them deeper into the band’s uniquely Finnish world of darkness and beauty.

For fans searching for something fresh beyond the standard metal formula, Post Pulse may be one of 2026’s most compelling discoveries.

From crushing grooves and cinematic textures to brutally honest storytelling rooted in Finnish culture, Post Pulse continues proving they are one of the most fearless and evolving acts in modern metal today. With Lupaus arriving May 29 and a European tour potentially on the horizon, the band appears ready to take its emotionally charged sound far beyond Finland’s borders.
